What is impro?

Impro, short for improvisation, is a form of live theatre where performers spontaneously create scenes, characters, dialogue, and narratives without a script or pre-planning. It’s all about making things up on the spot, relying on quick thinking, creativity, and collaboration with fellow performers.
In improvisation, performers often rely on various techniques and games to fuel their creativity and keep the scenes engaging. These may include prompts, suggestions from the audience, or predetermined rules or constraints to guide the scene.
The essence of impro lies in embracing spontaneity, accepting whatever comes your way, and building upon it with your fellow performers. It’s a form of theatre that celebrates the moment and thrives on the unexpected, creating unique and often hilarious performances that can vary greatly from one show to the next.
Impro has many shapes and form(at)s. It is most widely known as entertainment. There are short scenes and games, such as the ones we know from Whose line is it anyway? or competitive shows like Theatresports® or Maestro®. We can also witness so-called long forms, such as improvised musicals, full-length improvised shows in different genres like Greek tragedies, hero’s journeys, heists, love stories, murder mysteries, and many, many more!
However, impro can also be useful as a non-performative art form, such as in teambuilding and group therapy. We call this applied improvisation and it is the main focus ouf Improving Playfully.
